Trump denied that the summit had been contentious, a remark that contradicted what one G7 official described as a bitter harangue on Friday between the US president and his counterparts over tariffs.

Washington's trading partners are angry about US President Donald Trump's decision last week to impose tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from Canada, the European Union and Mexico.

Speaking to CNN today, Trump adviser Larry Kudlow says he personally negotiated with Trudeau during the two-day G7 summit in Quebec's Charlevoix region and insists the USA agreed to the language in the communique in good faith.

"Prime Minister Trudeau is being so indignant, bringing up the relationship that the USA and Canada had over the many years and all sorts of other things...but he doesn't bring up the fact that they charge us up to 300% on dairy - hurting our Farmers, killing our Agriculture!", Trump wrote in another tweet.

"We strive to reduce tariff barriers, non-tariff barriers and subsidies", the statement said.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe - a veteran of seven G7 leaders' meetings - said the Charlevoix summit featured heated exchanges, the likes of which he has never seen.

"Prime Minister Trudeau is being so indignant, bringing up the relationship that the USA and Canada had over the many years and all sorts of other things", Trump said in a tweet on Thursday.

"The United States has been taken advantage of for decades and decades", Trump said at a press conference on the second day of a two-day summit in Canada.

Conte was commenting from the G7 summit in Canada, where the leaders of Italy, France, Germany, the UK, Japan, Canada and the U.S. are gathered for top-level talks.

Though the USA appears increasingly isolated from its allies, Trump on Saturday insisted that his relationships with other leaders remains "great".

"The relationship that I've had [with the other leaders] is great, so you can tell that to your fake friends at CNN", the president told one reporter.

On Friday, French President Emmanuel Macron appeared to indicate room for negotiation ahead of a delayed meeting with Trump, telling reporters "Sometimes we disagree".

Trump has long criticized the United States' goods deficit.

Trump will be leaving the summit four hours earlier to travel to Singapore to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

He said he believes other countries are now more committed to a fairer trade relationship.

"The nations of the G7 are bound together by shared values and beliefs", Trump said. Mexico slapped a 25% import tariff on US steel products, as well as 20% on pork products, 25% on bourbon and duties on other agricultural goods including cranberries.

Pelosi also referenced Mr. Trump's earlier comments that the G7 should allow Russian Federation back in.

"We are like the piggy bank that everybody is robbing", he said.

"American jobs are on the line because of his actions and because of his administration", Trudeau said at a news conference Thursday.
