Thomas Markle Sr, 73, is reportedly undergoing heart surgery on Wednesday, according to the U.S. celebrity website TMZ through which, after months of silence, the retired TV lighting director now appears to communicate. The statement also revealed that Thomas and Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland, would arrive in the United Kingdom the week of the wedding, allowing time for Prince Harry's immediate family to meet them.

Thomas explained to TMZ that he did this in attempt to "recast" his image after photographers "ambushed" him several times and took "unflattering" shots of him.

"It might be a royal wedding, but neither Harry or Meghan are stuffy people and the last thing they want is their nuptials to be".

"(I'll be) Staying in the hospital a few more days.

Thomas Markle, 73, had three stents implanted in his heart and will reportedly need time to recover.

Concerns about Thomas Markle's health overshadowed Wednesday's announcements of the bridesmaids and page boys who will take part in the ceremony.

Before it emerged yesterday that he needed surgery, Mr Markle told TMZ he changed his mind and wanted to attend the wedding.

The wedding party was thrown into chaos earlier this week after Mr Markle said that he wouldn't be walking his daughter down the aisle after a paparazzi scandal. Occasionally a little shy at public occasions, he will have his dad, Prince William nearby to support him.

Thomas Markle is still recovering in an undisclosed hospital, and there is no word on when he will be released.

Prince Harry's press office said it had no additional comment beyond a statement made two days ago calling for "understanding and respect" for Markle's father, Thomas, "in this hard situation".

Almost two weeks ago, Kensington Palace confirmed that the former lighting director in Hollywood ― who now lives a low-key life in Rosarito, Mexico ― would be walking his daughter down the aisle on May 19.

You probably don't need this article to remind you that the royal wedding is very almost here.

Markle's mother, Doria Ragland, 61, is also reportedly en route to London, and will meet the Queen and senior royals before Saturday, when she will possibly accompany her daughter to the altar of St George's chapel, Windsor. She's also a contributing editor at Wedding Vacations magazine from the travel company Sunwing, and regularly outlines style trends on the daytime talk show Cityline.
