Mookie Betts, JD Martinez power Red Sox again

Seattle Mariners’ Kyle Seager right celebrates with Jean Segura after hitting a grand slam off Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher J.A. Happ during the first inning

Dominating effort by Chris Sales goes unrewarded

Martinez didn't do as well hitting against right-handed pitchers on the road previous year.

Fresh off a grueling three-game series with the Yankees, the Red Sox certainly didn't need this.

Stroman however, was put on the 10-day disabled list Friday with what is described as fatigue in his right shoulder. Sanchez's stuff, however, was good, as he got 14 swinging strikes, but his biggest mistake was a two-seam fastball he left up to Xander Bogaerts in the fourth inning, and the baseball ended up in the batter's eye 426 feet away in straightaway centre for a solo home run.

"I've never made excuses". "We'll see where it goes", Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. I'm off right now. "You throw that wrinkle up there and you can get free strikes". The 30-year old second baseman is having a solid season with his new team, now hitting.261 with nine home runs and 23 RBI's.

While the Red Sox bullpen has been questionable and the starting pitching has taken a step back after a hot start, the Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 5-3, on Sunday to complete a hard road trip with a 6-4 record thanks largely to two people: Mookie Betts and Martinez.

With the victory, the Jays improved to 21-18 and got the early jump on a big weekend set with the Bosox.

Toronto has a 3-4 ATS mark over its last seven games and the under has hit in four of those seven. The bullpen has an ERA of 3.76, along with a K/9 of 10.25.

The only member of the Jays five-man rotation without a win this season, Stroman's 7.71 ERA is the highest in the majors among qualified starters.

He was asked if his condition might be the result playing video games. "I thought he would chase, he obviously didn't and Maile went down and got it".

"We just had a good team plan", Betts said. "I haven't been myself out there at all".

"He said 'I'll get you back for that, '" said Sanchez, who had five solid innings but a high pitch count for the Jays. The career outing by Maile featured both a game-tying jack in the bottom of the seventh and a walk-off homer to end it in the 12th. After not hitting a homer since May 31, 2017, it was quite a night for Maile who now has seven multi-hit games this season.

- Martinez and Betts, who finished 2-for-4 with a walk and two stolen bases, were the only members of the Red Sox lineup to record multiple hits. "He's been committed (to being better) at the plate".

Price's numbers over the years against Toronto have been rather gaudy. So Betts saved a run by recording the final out of the fourth inning. Biagini? Or perhaps the newly recalled Deck McGuire or Sam Gaviglio.

As is his way, Sale was spectacular at times after giving up two early runs.

Sale struck out his next six batters on the way to retiring 11 in a row before Maile hit his first homer with two out in the seventh.

Martinez gave a Sanchez offering a ride and the ball just missed clearing the wall in right by just a matter of inches. "The last time we heard that was - who was the guy, Jay?" He allowed just two earned runs with the third coming of the Maile error.

After a late start in spring training while he was still looking for a team to sign him (for a hefty sum of $110 million over five years), Martinez began the year slow, hitting.217 with a.725 OPS in his first 11 games in a Red Sox uniform.

- Jackie Bradley Jr. broke out of his slump with a sharp single in the ninth inning.

Blue Jays: Toronto added INF Gio Urshela to its roster and optioned OF Dalton Pompey to Triple-A Buffalo.

As a starter in Buffalo, his performance has been largely forgettable (0-3 with a 4.57 ERA in four starts).
