The long and turbulent marriage between Matt Harvey and the New York Mets has finally ended.

Harvey has refused an assignment to the minor leagues and will be designated for assignment Saturday, ending his tenure with the team. Harvey is 0-2 with a 7.00 ERA in four starts and four relief appearances. Could the Dark Knight stay in Gotham and simply change his pinstripes?

He will be designated for assignment Saturday morning, taking him off the major league roster after a almost six seasons in a Mets uniform. In his four relief appearances with his final one coming on Thursday night, against the Braves when he allowed five runs in two innings.

"The end of an era", general manager Sandy Alderson said. For a pitcher who had already been removed from the starting rotation, this was not the greatest way to impress the team. Because of Harvey's $5,625,000 salary, a trade may be hard to work out unless the Mets agree to send cash as part of a deal. A trade could be complicated because of Harvey's $5.6 million salary.

But as Mets starters Jacob DeGrom and Noah Syndergaard emerged as top pitchers, Harvey fell off, and the Mets' trio hasn't become the dominant force many hoped or expected. "So I think that at this point, pragmatism, realism far outweighed other considerations".

Harvey never shied away from the lifestyle afforded an athlete in New York City, dating supermodels and hitting up top clubs.

As a result, the Mets have designated Matt Harvey for assignment, meaning his time with the Mets organization has reached its end. Thoracic outlet syndrome affected Harvey's feel for pitching and location, he said, but added that Harvey is healthy and has enough velocity.

He was 6-13 with a 6.70 ERA last season, when he was sidelined from mid-June until September because of a stress injury to the scapula bone in his right shoulder. That in itself wasn't a problem, though he was suspended after not showing up for a game in 2017 amid tabloid reports that he had been out partying the night before. "I guess the short answer is no".
