Trump's Chief of Staff Defends 'Candid and Strong' Relationship With President

Bornstein said he did not receive a signed form authorizing the release of Trump's records with his consent, which is a violation of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, NBC News reported.

The report also suggested the chief of staff holds that women are generally more emotional than men, and he said so once in the president's presence.

In his statement, Kelly said that their President have a strong and trusting relationship. "I told the president that if he had a healthier diet over the past 20 years he might live to be 200 year old", Jackson said. Three White House spokespeople said they'd never heard Kelly call anyone an idiot and that if he did say he was saving the country, he was doing so in jest.

One source familiar with the situation said Trump was rankled by the way Kelly handled the Porter situation; the chief of staff initially attempted to defend Porter against the allegation until a photograph of Porter's ex-wife's blackened eye surfaced and sparked outrage.

Carol Lee, Courtney Kube, Kristen Welker and Stephanie Ruhle of NBC teamed up for a story headlined, "Kelly thinks he's saving USA from disaster, calls Trump 'idiot, ' say White House staffers".

After the report by NBC News first appeared Monday, Trump went on Twitter to accuse what he calls "The Fake News" of making up false stories and using unnamed sources he says don't exist. "We've got to save him from himself". They are totally unhinged, and the great success of this Administration is making them do and say things that even they can't believe they are saying. Fake News is going "bonkers!"

President Donald Trump and Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari speak during a news conference on Monday.

"The private manner aides describe may shed new light on why Kelly now finds himself - just nine months into the job - grappling with diminished influence and a drumbeat of questions about how long he'll remain at the White House".

Kelly referred to Trump as "unhinged" during a meeting with the Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joseph Dunford and senior National Security Council officials, the senior administration official added.

Most recently, Kelly was rumored to be under consideration for the spot of Veterans Affairs secretary after the president's last pick withdrew his nomination.
