With battle royale games being more popular than survival games, Daybreak Games dropped the King of the Kill name and simply called it H1Z1, leaving its survival mode to Just Survive.
The game's first Closed Beta weekend starts this month, and players can sign up now at the game's official website. Daybreak Games made the announcement this morning, and yours truly got to see the game in action, running on a PS4, as part of a special preview last week.
A free open beta will launch on PlayStation 4 on May 22, and will feature new weapons, a new progression system, and a revamped user interface.
When it comes to the games new progression mechanics, players will only be able to loot six level-one weapons at the start of a match and must decide which airdrops to pursue if they want better weapons and gear.
H1Z1 won't release on the Xbox One anytime soon - and it's unclear exactly when a full release will come for the PS4 version either. Most notably, gas pacing has been changed to speed up the speed of play, and airdrops have been revamped to occur with a frequency that will encourage players to keep moving, and engaging in firefights. There will also be a handful of new weapons like the KH43, Marauder, Combat Shotgun, CNQ-09, Scout Rifle, and MK46. The company announced that an open beta will take place on May 22 and introduce many console-specific features and tweaks.
H1Z1 is finally coming to console.
'We have reimagined the game for PlayStation 4 and have designed it to accentuate the essentials of Battle Royale that make the genre so exciting to watch and play, ' claims producer Terrence Yee. PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive 20% off their preorder purchase. Players with a more passive strategy may diligently search the world for these rare crates, which emit a low radio chatter and signal beacon when they are in proximity.
As for technical information, H1Z1 is said to be optimized for the PS4 hardware, but the only concrete detail is that the PS4 Pro can run the game at 60 frames per second. Players can purchase the pre-order bundle at $29.99, which contains bonuses such as the H1Z1 pre-order theme and other cosmetic items.
