Philadelphia Flyers watch season end in heartbreaking fashion

Guentzel scored four goals as Penguins eliminate Flyers

Philadelphia extended the series on Friday by beating Pittsburgh 4-2, with four different players scoring goals. We weren't. Our guys couldn't wait to get back here, go out and play a full 60 minutes and push this thing back to a Game 7.

He tied it at 4 with 54 seconds left in the second period off a Flyers turnover.

Sean Couturier also had a hat trick for the Flyers, who haven't won a Stanley Cup since 1975.

He scored the tying and go-ahead goals in Game 6, then scored two more - all four in succession - to put the game away and lift the Penguins to an 8-5 Game 6 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday. They saw Sidney Crosby rip out the hearts of their fans with six goals and 13 points in six games. Under third-year coach Dave Hakstol, this season's berth was considered a mild surprise, especially when the team lost 10 straight games in November/December and all seemed lost.

They scored at least five goals in eight of their 10 games against the Flyers this season, losing the only two games they did not top the five-goal mark.

It's a factor that allowed the Penguins to dispatch their cross-state rival Philadelphia Flyers in the first round of the playoffs to advance to the Metropolitan Division finals, which will begin later this week.

The Penguins took the series, 4-2.

According to coach Mike Sullivan, there's another factor they might want to consider evaluating. He also missed game 4, which was a 5-0 win for the Penguins. Austin Watson and Filip Forsberg each scored their fourth goals of the series before Nick Bonino and Viktor Arvidsson each notched their second. Penguins forward Carter Rowney cross-checked Travis Konency and roughed him up on the ice while the officials just watched.

The Flyers center went off before the Flyers were eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs Sunday at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. It was Laughton's first career playoff goal.

Claude Giroux picked up his first goal of the series and Matt Read added an empty-netter. With the win, the Penguins won the best out of seven series four games to two. Lord knows what shenanigans would have occurred in a game 7 between the Flyers and Penguins. Patrick is going to have to take his game to another level next season and it will be a key component in whether or not the Flyers take that next step. That was all the separation Rinne needed as the Predators improved to 6-6 all-time in a Game 6 situation.
