On National Healthcare Decision Day Monday, former First Lady Barbara Bush officially announced her decision to no longer seek medical treatment.

Barbara Pierce was born June 8, 1925, in New York City, raised in the suburbs of Rye and attended boarding school at the tony Ashley Hall all-girls prep school in SC.

The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy began during her White House years with the goal of improving the lives of disadvantaged Americans by boosting literacy among parents and their children. In 1994, when George W. was elected governor of Texas, son Jeb narrowly lost to incumbent Lawton Chiles in Florida.

The Bushes, who were married January 6, 1945, had the longest marriage of any presidential couple in American history. Her father was the publisher of McCall's and Redbook magazines.

Dr. Deters says it is vital for families to have conversations on how to treat their family members. "I was all right in high school, but when it came to Smith I was a cliffhanger".
