The vehicle "has a new conceptual design philosophy created to bring together the style with great aerodynamics and a more spacious and well-built interior". The exterior actually looks bigger than the outgoing Focus, but Ford says that its dimensions are unchanged. Ford says the new Focus comes equipped with an anti-pollution air purifier system, to get those dirty 2.5 PM particles out of the air.
The Ford Focus is turning 20 and receiving quite a few gifts for its birthday. All told, the new Focus is a handsome vehicle.
The new Focus is built on Ford's adaptable new C2 platform, which will be underpinning a host of upcoming models from the automaker including the Kuga SUV.
Watch the live launch below. A 675 watt Bang and Olufsen 10-speaker stereo system pairs up with the latter. Unlike its rival's active cornering lights that relies exclusively on steering inputs, the Focus' Adaptive Front Lighting System with Predictive Curve Light uses a camera to read the road conditions ahead, and pre-emptively swivels and adjusts the headlamps' focus in anticipation of an upcoming curve, junction or roundabout.
Improved aerodynamics and those new gas and diesel engines also promise to improve fuel efficiency - though the automaker didn't back that up with hard numbers in its first news release on the next Focus line. There's also a 2.0-litre diesel engine option for Europe.
While we've talked about the above safety kit, the headlights on the new Focus are so advanced that they deserve their own mention.
On the road, Ford claim it'll be better than ever thanks to a new independent rear suspension with continuously controlled damping.
Ford places a lot of emphasis on the new Focus' technology credentials, with majority coming in the shape of driver assistance features like adaptive cruise control with stop&go (active up to a top speed of 200 km/h or 125 mph), speed sign recognition and lane centering. An electric parking brake - standard with eight-speed automatic transmission and for high series models with manual transmission - and Rotary Gear Shift Dial also free up more space for the driver and front passenger.
Overseas, Focus will be available as a four-door sedan, five-door wagon and hatchback, Ford said. Standard drive modes include Normal, Sport, and Eco, and adjust the engine and transmission responses, steering feel, and Adaptive Cruise Control to match a driver's preferences. "I am immensely proud of the team that has helped deliver what I believe is the best vehicle we have ever made", he added.
And we'll likely only get the hatch and sedan variants, to be sourced from either China or Europe depending on the model. The Focus, one of Ford's most popular vehicles of all-time from a global standpoint, has received a full redesign and will be on sale in North American in the second half of 2019 as a 2020 model. Down the line, if all goes to plan, Ford's goal is to increase the modularity of its parts, so that different engines, components like sunroofs, and electrical systems can be shared just like auto platforms are.
