The political resolution is likely to spell out the party's stance on alliances amid several suggestions that opposition parties should come together against the BJP-led NDA in 2019. The BJP, on its part, tried to play down its defeat saying that people tend to vote on local factors in these elections as their results have no bearing on the stability of either the central or state governments.

SP's Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel won the candidacy in Phulpur by a substantial margin of 59,613 votes.

Prominent leaders in attendance were NCP's Sharad Pawar, SP's Ram Gopal Yadav, BSP's Satish Chandra Mishra and former chief ministers Omar Abdullah, Babulal Marandi, Hemant Soren and Jitan Ram Manjhi, besides JD (U)'s Sharad Yadav and RLD's Ajit Singh.

New Delhi:Sonia Gandhi Congress functionary will host a dinner for opposition.

Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav said the effort to unite the opposition was underway. But its rival coalition - led by the Congress party - has only 52 seats. But there were no political talks.

"Foremost I want to thank BSP leader Mayawati for her and her party's support in this important fight", he told the media yesterday. Ahead of the All India Congress Committee's (AICC) plenary session that begins on Friday, nearly all the State units of the Grand Old Party will voice for a larger alliance to combat the BJP in the 2019 elections. Congress insiders say the party is not only looking for an alliance with the NCP in Maharashtra for 2019 but also for an understanding for the by-elections to two Lok Sabha seats, Palghar and Bhandara-Gondia. While the NDA was "breaking apart", opposition parties were getting together, he said apparently hinting at TDP pulling out of the Modi government.

Almost nine out of 10 Indians hold a favourable opinion of him, according to a research report published in November, and opposition victories in a handful of seats can not be seen as an indication the mood is swinging away from Modi and the BJP nationally, analysts warn.

"This defeat is definitely an unexpected one", said UP BJP spokesperson Rakesh Tripathi. "It is not an impossible task", said a senior Congress leader.

"There were some shortcomings which will be reviewed at the micro-level", he said.

The Congress chief is also expected to meet West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee when she comes to attend a dinner hosted by Mr. Pawar for Opposition leaders. In the past six months, the BJP has lost by polls in Gurdaspur (Punjab), Ajmer and Alwar (Rajasthan) and Phulpur and Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh). It is learnt that talks to form such an alliance broke down because the Congress insisted that the Samajwadi Party forfeit its claim to one of the seats. After the next Lok Sabha election, the Congress is expecting a 2004-like situation when the UPA-led by it came to power.

"When you ask for what changes have happened in the state, you should see how gun-totting criminals have given up on crime and have become vegetable vendors", he told show host Sharma amid applause.

The party's candidates in the state lost their deposits in the recent by-polls to two Lok Sabha seats, the results of which were announced today.

"The party will get around 20 seats to contest in both UP and Bihar if it goes for alliances in the two states but at the same time the organisation will face a huge setback in about 100 seats which it leave for its partners", he said.
