Health officials said 2,418 patients have been hospitalized with confirmed cases of flu between August 27, 2017 and March 10, 2018.
Last season, 11 deaths were reported in Alberta Health Services (AHS) Central Zone.
There are some signs of improvement. These restrictions will be lifted Friday, March 16 at 7 a.m. For the past several weeks, the number of new hospitalizations related to the flu has continued to drop.
Despite the decline in patients with the flu, visitors who experience flu-like symptoms are asked to not visit patients in the hospitals.
"While it was a sacrifice for both patients and hospital staff, we believe these efforts helped reduce transmission of respiratory illnesses during a period of heightened flu activity", Allen County Health Commissioner Dr. Deborah McMahan said.
Those anxious about the flu or feel that might be at risk, should speak with their doctor about getting the flu shot or other preventative measures.
Azar pleaded to the public, "Go get a flu shot!" after sharing the CDC study. Even though this year's vaccine is 36 percent effective, that is a higher chance of staying healthy during flu season. "You can catch them back to back to back like that".
