Arizona associate head coach Lorenzo Romar directed the team, and Ayton played during a 98-93 loss in overtime. I also can't muster much outrage, knowing how much value a player like Ayton can generate for his school while seeing only a fraction in return.
Miller also issued a statement.
Altman has publicly supported Arizona coach Sean Miller - who if these allegations are true has nearly certainly coached his final game for the Wildcats - and praised Arizona as the team everyone is chasing, a statement that apparently includes not only Pac-12 teams but also the federal authorities.
There were some about the game, mainly about how Arizona let OR comeback from a 13-point second-half deficit, but most the questions were about people who weren't available.
Miller has said he "will be vindicated", and a lawyer representing Ayton's family has said the allegation is false.
"I have great respect for Arizona", Altman said.
In the second half, Dana Altman's Ducks made some good adjustments, and the OR zone was able to limit Ayton's touches in the post.
The loss dropped Arizona to 22-7 overall and 12-4, while OR improved to 19-10 and 9-7. When Dawkins asked Miller if he should work with assistant coach Emanuel "Book" Richardson to finalize their agreement, Miller told Dawkins he should deal directly with him when it came to money, the sources said. Auburn's Chuck Person was another assistant coach who had been arrested.
Arizona formally fired Richardson on January 11.
Jackson-Cartwright didn't want to go into details about Miller's departure, nor did Romar have much to add. "His shooting will continue to improve, and I think at that point, when all of that comes together, then you're going to have an elite National Basketball Association player".
Deandre Ayton had 28 points and 18 rebounds, one short of season highs in both, and Rawle Alkins had 24 points for the Wildcats (22-7, 12-4), whose lead in the Pac-12 race was cut to one-half game over USC (21-9, 12-5).
Ayton is among several active college basketball players who have been linked to possible illegal payments in the FBI's investigation of bribery and corruption in college basketball.
Jay Bilas believes Sean Miller has talked his way out of college basketball.
"This is a career-ending thing for Sean Miller", Bilas said.
