The Michigan State hockey team dropped the first of a two game series with No. 5 Ohio State, 4-2, on Friday night at Value City Arena in Columbus. It reeled off 11 straight points in a 2:39 span to grab a 28-13 advantage at the 10:51 mark on two free throws by Alstork.
Alstork, who led IL with 19 points, said he felt like the team got too complacent after reeling off 11 makes in its first 17 shot attempts.
The Illini had all the makings of an upset early and the first win over a ranked team in the Brad Underwood era, they led the 17th-ranked Buckeyes by 15 midway through the first half but OSU went on a 20-0 run.
IL kept it close the rest of the way, but lost 75-67 at Value City Arena.
"Every time we got the ball to the third side in the first half in that first run we were great", IL coach Brad Underwood said. "We do everything right". "They're just built and put together that well, and they play that well together".
The Illini made just four of 13 attempts from downtown in the first half and finished the game shooting 32.1 percent from behind the arc.
Ohio State will travel to Purdue Wednesday night. Did they miss Williams, whose suspension for an unspecified violation of team rules was announced hours before the game?
IL forced 10 turnovers in the first half.
They'll go as far as star Keita Bates-Diop is able to take them. His survived a first-period challenge on a takedown call and then scored eight of the next nine points.
Looking towards Saturday's game, UW must not only defend the dominant OSU trio, but it likely must also rebound the Buckeyes. Holtmann would be the first to point out that having a conference-POY-level performer anchoring your offense is going to make you look like a really smart coach. We have the Big Tens coming up and the NCAAs and it's one of three battles. The Buckeyes have won the doubles point in all three matches this year, including capturing it against United Kingdom with victories of 6-2 and 6-1 at three and one, respectively. IL also beat Rutgers by 31, holding the Knights to just 60 points.
Emma Maltais scored 15 seconds into the 2nd period for the only goal of the game. Then, trailing 62-58 with six minutes left in regulation, the Buckeyes closed the game on 17-5 run to seal the victory.
But No. 1 Penn State wanted to find a way not to disappoint 6,699 fans at full throat, and to maintain that ranking and preserve that 43-match winning streak, and Anthony Cassar had the simple answer - just knock off the No. 1 guy in the country at 197pounds. If Notre Dame can keep the scores low this weekend I think it can pick up a nice road sweep.
Despite the poor outings from three of Illinois' top scorers, one bright spot was Alstork.
Ohio State is legit, folks.
IL will return home to face Wisconsin on Thursday.
