If Congress fails to pass a federal spending bill before the deadline on January 20, it will trigger a "government shutdown" for the first time since 2013.
On Saturday, Zinke tweeted, "Not all national parks are fully open but we're working hard to make as much accessible as is safely possible". "National and regional offices and support centers will be closed and secured, except where they are needed to support excepted personnel". The park will provide limited emergency response. Guided snowmobile and snowcoach trips with commercial operators will be allowed, however, non-commercially guided snowmobile trips will not be allowed during the shutdown. Transportation services between Mammoth and Old Faithful will remain operating as usual on their regular schedules, while tours and activities may be modified based on road and weather conditions.
"Most of our park roads and trails will remain open", park superintendent Brad Bennett said. The Hosmer Grove and Kipahulu campgrounds remained open, but without restroom or other facilities. During the shutdown, the park will not update its social media accounts or website.
Things like campgrounds, visitors centers, and heated restrooms will not be open during the shutdown. A gas station on a road inside the park where it snowed overnight making it impassible would not be open if it relies on park snow removal.
And Kate Kelly, public lands director at the Center for American Progress and an Interior official during the Obama administration, accused Zinke of "using the national parks as pawns in some political game". Visitors at the park were ordered to leave by 3 p.m. October 3.
Concession Run Facilities: Concession services normally provided at this time of year will remain open.
Access is not restricted on U.S. Forest Service land, but services will be unavailable.
On Thursday, the Smithsonian Institution issued a statement saying its 19 museums and the National Zoo would close starting Monday if there's a shutdown - but would remain open through the weekend. We emphasized scientific research and mitigation of climate change; engaging young generations; evolving a more diverse culture of park visitors, advocates and employees; bringing our schools to our parks and our parks to our schools; stressing park urbanization; protecting the natural diversity of wildlife; and so much more.
In New Mexico, parts of Bandelier National Monument's cliff dwellings and fragile archaeological sites were off-limits to protect them from damage, but the entrance road and some trails were open. But the National Park System also includes buildings like Ford's Theater in Washington, where President Abraham Lincoln was shot, and Independence Hall in Philadelphia, where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were signed. Scenic drives are also available on the Star Valley Scenic Byway.
