Visit a Washington park for free on MLK Day

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration planned Jan. 15

All City of Jasper offices will be closed on Monday, Jan. 15, for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Commission and Habitat for Humanity joined forces Monday for a day of renovation at the former home of Daisy Bates in Little Rock to mark the beginning of a week of events leading up to the national King holiday on January 15. Volunteers will meet at 8:30 a.m.in Alumni Hall in the HUB-Robeson Center and will be dispersed to various locations throughout the community.

The annual MLK National Holiday Celebration includes five free, family-friendly events created to promote inclusiveness in Mecklenburg County.

There will be other MLK memorial services in Evansville all week, including one Sunday at 7 p.m.at the New Hope Baptist Church.

With the theme of Perseverance and Purposeful Action, the event will include performances by a children's choir and a CU student acapella group; the playing of excerpts from some of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s famous speeches and favorite gospel songs; and remarks by community and CU leaders. The event is free to attend and light refreshments will be available. Interfaith Commemorative Service at 6 p.m.at Boston Avenue United Methodist Church, 1301 S. Boston Ave.; and Martin Luther King Jr. Tickets will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis when doors open at 5:30 p.m. Seales is known for taking serious topics and making them relatable and interesting through humor.
