Liverpool and Egypt forward Mohamed Salah named African Footballer of the Year

Getty Mohamed Salah picked up the award for African Player of the Year

The Egypt global winger scooped the prestigious award by fending off competition from Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane and Borussia Dortmund's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Salah's heroics helped Egypt reach the African Nations Cup final and qualify for this year's World Cup.

He also had a hand in all seven of the goals that took the Pharaohs to their first World Cup since 1990 - assisting two and scoring five, including the stoppage-time penalty against Congo that saw them qualify them for Russian Federation. The Senegal sprinter was one of the favourites to bag the prestigious award but it was the Egyptian who named was echoed in the Ghanaian capital Accra on Thursday.

Salah achieved many records this season with the Egyptian football national team and his club Liverpool FC.

Liverpool's Mohamed Salah has been nominated for the Premier League Player of the Month Award alongside players from Chelsea, Tottenham, Manchester United and Manchester City.

Another Twitter user posted:"African football is sooo corrupt man Salah is not even African he's Egyptian". I had a fantastic time, with the national team and the team, it was an unbelievable moment.

"Fully well deserved to be crowned Africa's best, I must say".

"I want to tell them to never stop dreaming, never stop believing".

"I think we have a good team and we did well in the African Cup and the qualification for the World cup, everybody saw that". He was the joint top scorer in the final round of WC qualifiers.

Other award winners included Women's Footballer of the Year Asisat Oshoala of Nigeria and Youth Player of the Year Patson Daka of Zambia.

Women's National Team of the Year- Bayana Bayana (South Africa).
