Chiefs to start Patrick Mahomes in season finale

Reid announced he'd give incumbent starter Alex Smith the week off and start rookie passer Patrick Mahomes in his stead to close out the regular season.

Mahomes was taken at No. 10 overall after the Chiefs traded up with the Buffalo Bills, but has been forced to sit behind Smith, who has enjoyed a career year in Kansas City with over 4,000 passing yards and another Pro Bowl nod.

Patrick Mahomes will start on Sunday against the Broncos, per Andy Reid.

Leading up to the game, Reid did not want to set the bar too high for what we might expect to see.

Mahomes, the tenth overall pick this year out of Texas Tech, will not just be making his first career National Football League start, he'll be getting his first-ever snaps: Alex Smith has yet to come off the field this season. The opportunity has presented itself for Smith to get the day off and the coaching staff to get a look at how Mahomes has progressed this season.

This is the flawless scenario both for Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in general.

"It's not going to hurt him for sure", Reid said.

"My knowledge of the game I feel like has taken tremendous leaps", Mahomes said after last week's win over the Dolphins. His reemphasis on Hunt and dialing up shot plays for Smith has been part of a Chiefs offensive resurgence including averaging 30.75 points over the past month - up seven points over the previous four games.

Yes, it's a meaningless game on Sunday against the Broncos. He also made at ton of pretty throws.
