Twenty feared dead as bus plunges into river in Rajasthan

About 20 persons are feared dead as a bus in which they were travelling plunged into Banas river in Sawai Madhopur district of Rajasthan on Saturday morning.

The bus, which was carrying passengers in the Indian state of Rajasthan, was speeding to overtake another vehicle when it crashed through a bridge railing, falling into the river below, survivors said.

"The accident in Sawai Madhopur is extremely tragic".

"Total 26 bodies have been recovered so far".

Passengers were from other states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Assam.

Chief minister Vasundhara Raje expressed grief over the deadly incident and directed the authorities to gear up the rescue operation.

All the injured people have been admitted to the hospitals for treatment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the state government was closely monitoring the situation. "We needed a crane to pull the bus out of the river", said Anoop Singh, station house officer at Soorwal police station in Sawai Madhopur.
