Google has announced some of the lighter version of apps for Android phones running with 1GB or less RAM as a part of the Android Oreo Go edition. However, the devices running on the Android versions released before Lollipop are still neglected by Google. "It has started to roll out to users with the language set to English in India, the US, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and Singapore, as well as in Spanish in the US, Mexico and Spain", Maksim Mukha, Programme Manager, Google Assistant, said in a statement. The company is now testing a lite version of Google Maps, the Google Maps Go.
Earlier this year we first brought the Assistant to Android 6.0 Marshmallow and higher with Google Play Services. Once the update is installed, you'll be able to fire up the AI helper by saying "OK, Google", long-pressing your home button, or by tapping the Assistant icon that's added to your "all apps" list.
Google acknowledges that 26% of all Android devices are still based on Lollipop, the Android 5.0 version launched in 2014, while around 30% run Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
Maps Go is Google's latest offering under its "Go" series, meant for emerging markets such as India where low-end phones are common and internet speeds are slow.
However, there is a way that you can try out Google Maps Go if if you are not running the Android Go operating system via something known as PWA or Progressive Web App. It sounds like Google isn't quite going to hit this level of saturation, though, since the Assistant is limited by language and country.
Android Police are saying that when users decide to use the video chat option within the standard dial app the Duo app will open, which in turn activates the phones camera.
