Three pilgrims have been reportedly killed and over a dozen are injured in a stampede on the banks of Ganga river in Bihar's Begusarai district, an official said.
Thousands of devotees congregated at various river banks of the river Ganga including Haridwar on the occasion of Kartik Purnima, a festival devoted to Lord Vishnu.
The incident took place when the devotees have gathered at a major bathing spot to celebrate for Kartik Purnima at Simaria Ghat in Begusarai.
Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar has announced an ex- gratia of Rs4 lakh each for the families of the deceased and free treatment for those injured in the incident. As per another report, heavy gathering at the ghat is also believed to be the cause of the stampede.
According to eyewitnesses, the deceased include two young men and two old women.
Authorities have said that they are in the process of identifying the dead and the injured are being treated in the hospital. "Attempts were being made to establish the identity of the third woman", he added. Sources said the death toll might go up. If any negligence on part of the police is found, accountability will be fixed.
As per the reports, the police is trying to clear the incident and also investigating the ascertain cause behind the stampede.
