The administration also insisted it's long past time to end the political squabbling and insult trading over President Donald Trump's compassion for America's war dead, even as it lobbed fresh vilification at Florida Rep. Frederica Wilson.
The White House chief of staff said he was so upset by her criticism of Trump's call that he went to walk "among the finest men and women on Earth" in a 90-minute visit to nearby Arlington National Cemetery, among the graves of service members, including some who died under his command. He tweets: "I hope the Fake News Media keeps talking about Wacky Congresswoman Wilson in that she, as a representative, is killing the Democrat Party!"
After a video emerged Friday to contradict White House chief of staff John Kelly's attack on Wilson as a grandstander at a 2015 Federal Bureau of Investigation ceremony, Trump said in an interview with Fox Business Network that Wilson's criticism of Kelly was "sickening".
Trump spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders says it is "inappropriate" to question a retired four-star general such as Kelly.
Kelly also said that Wilson claimed to have taken credit for securing funding for an Federal Bureau of Investigation field office in Miami. Video of the speech contradicted his recollection.
"The White House itself is full of white supremacists", Wilson said.
Trump on Saturday also endorsed a wild theory from Twitter use Eagle Pundit, who believes Wilson's recent comments are some last ditch effort by Dems to distract from Hillary Clinton's ties to Putin.
Meanwhile, said Reid, recipients of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA - the Obama-era immigration policy that allows some individuals brought to the US illegally as minors to avoid deportation for a time, and be eligible for work permits - had become "pawns" of the Trump administration.
Wilson said the family had put his phone call on speakerphone, and stood by her account.
Reid also criticized Trump's Twitter habit and what he said it's done to society: "World peace".
Kelly, whose son was killed in Afghanistan in 2010, was outraged over what he saw as Wilson trying to score political points off a tragedy, according to two White House officials not authorized to discuss private conversations.
But Trump wanted to make the calls, and asked Kelly for advice on what to say. Sanders later deemed it " a personal decision" by Kelly to discuss the matter publicly.
However, newly released video showed Kelly misrepresented Wilson's 2015 remarks and she did not take credit for funding the building.
Jones-Johnson says she was in the auto and "the statement is true".
Kelly said the Defense Department is investigating the details of the October 4 ambush that killed four American soldiers, including Johnson. The FBI said it is assisting, as it has in the past when American citizens are killed overseas.
