Wenger's Chelsea counterpart Antonio Conte refused to make a direct comment about Luiz's sending off but queried how his side had the habit of never ending with a full complement of players against Arsenal.

This is the third consecutive game against Arsenal that Chelsea have finished with ten players.

Last season, no Chelsea player was sent off in the league. Every game against Arsenal is always very tough, we knew very well what type of game we had to face. David Luiz was sent off in the 87th minute for a high, sliding challenge on Sead Kolasinac. "We lost Pedro against Arsenal in China as well".

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey told Sky Sports: "We needed that against a top team".

"We have responded well to losing on the opening day and got some strong results". We have come here and struggled in recent years but we showed what we're capable of, competing against the best. Wenger's side will also be boosted by the fact that they are going to play a second string XI in the Europa League until the knockouts, giving them the chance to focus on the Premier League.

Such as when Ramsey was given the freedom to exploit pockets of space and waltz unchallenged through the defense just before halftime.

It is the third time in a row in which Chelsea have been reduced to 10 men against the Gunners, who earned a 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge, but Wenger believes that the referee made the right call. Coming on top of the FA Cup final win over Chelsea in May and Community Shield success, Arsenal has the upper-hand in this London rivalry at the moment.

"We feel we're in a good place and now need to keep building on this".

The second half lacked the excitement of the first and the introductions of Eden Hazard and Alexis Sanchez from the two substitutes' benches did not provide the desired spark.

"We tried to play when we had the ball and we were close to winning the game".

Arguably they should at least have got on the scoreboard but their record signing Alexandre Lacazette missed an open goal in the first-half.
