Moon said that Murray's response to his accusers has been inappropriate and that abuse victims should be believed.

In a statement released Tuesday, Murray adamantly denied the allegations, but said his resignation would be "best for the city".

"I just think it is so sad to see it end this way and also sad that we have out there, potentially, these victims who have come forward and whose pain also needs to be addressed". He has endorsed Ms. Durkan as his successor, and during the primary campaign she, along with a majority of the City Council, stopped short of saying he should step aside before his term was out.

As chairman, Murray pushed to raise the city's base time-based compensation to $15.

Moon called for Murray to step down in May. Despite calls for his resignation, Murray made a decision to stay on.

"My sadness was about another victim coming forward, and sadness over leaders like Ed Murray who are unable to face the truth, remain in their positions", she said.

The lawsuit was dropped in June with the intention of refiling after Murray's term in office, as the mayor announced he would not be seeking re-election.

"There would be times when I would fake sleeping because I didn't want him touching me", Dyer, told the Times.

Louise Chernin with the Greater Seattle Business Association, the region's LGBT chamber of commerce, declined to comment except to say, "This has been a hard time for our community".

"I did not sexually abuse any of her children", Murray told the Times. "There's been numerous fights between our two families for many years, and much ugliness".

Murray is a Democrat and the first openly gay mayor of Seattle, Washington.

Murray was quoted in the original story as saying he still meant to serve out the remainder of his term. And I think he got some great things done.

- Seattle Mayor Ed Murray, dogged since April by mounting allegations of child sexual abuse, said he would resign as mayor effective Wednesday afternoon. "He did so. I think that's best for the city", Durkan said.

He further added the allegations were a result of a family rift.

A former state legislator instrumental in pushing for passage of gay rights laws, Murray said his accusers' claims "paint me in the worst possible historical portraits of a gay man...." He was also accused of sexual assault in 1984, but charges were not filed.
