"Amazon expects to hire new teams and executives in HQ2, and will also let existing senior leaders across the company decide whether to locate their teams in HQ1, HQ2 or both".
Additionally, Amazon would like HQ2 to be 30 miles from the population center of the metropolitan area; within a 45-minute drive to an global airport; 1-2 miles away from a major highways and arterial roads; and access to mass transit at the site.
"The company is changing radically and it depends so heavily on disruptive thinking". Fitzgerald said he expects every major city in the country to show interest.
To choose the city that will host the HQ2, Amazon says there will be a few "decision drivers", like incentive programs such as workforce grants, fee reductions, tax credits/exemptions, relocation grants and utility incentives.
The economic opportunity is quite baffling: $50 billion in local investment and 50,000 jobs averaging $100,000 salaries over the next decade. In the Washington region alone, D.C., Loudoun County and Prince George's County have already indicated that they will also be pursuing Amazon.
Toronto's mayor John Tory called the Canadian city a "prime candidate". "We look forward to hearing from you", it said in the statement.
Amazon is accepting proposals from cities through October 19, and is expected to announce the victor in 2018.
City officials may very well battle for Amazon's business.
Amazon's campus in the northwest USA state of Washington now employs more than 40,000 people scattered across 33 buildings and 750,000 square meters (8.1 million square feet) of office space, according to a company fact sheet. Last month, Amazon held job fairs at 10 USA sites to fill more than 50,000 jobs. Texas leads the way with the value of subsidies to Amazon, followed by Illinois, Kentucky, and OH, it said.
There is some precedent in the business world to developing additional headquarters.
Lately, Amazon has not been shy about investing beyond its Seattle hub.
