Manhunt underway after Missouri Police Officer shot, killed

Sgt. Bill Lowe with the Missouri State Highway Patrol says around 10: 45 p.m. Sunday officer Gary Michael initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle on a registration violation.

Sergeant Martin said Mr. McCarthy's auto was found abandoned a short distance from the scene of the shooting after it hit an embankment. The suspect drove about three blocks before crashing his auto and fleeing on foot. Authorities did not know whether he was wounded.

According to information from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a Police Officer in was shot and killed last night in western-Missouri's Clinton.

The shooting unfolded in downtown Clinton, near several government buildings, including the Henry County courthouse, library and sheriff's office. "It's a tragedy for Clinton Police Department, but it's a tragedy for this community", Lowe told the station.

Michael was rushed to a hospital where he died from his injuries.

'(Michael) was heroic right to the end. The suspect is considered still armed an risky.

The vehicle stopped was registered to McCarthy, Lowe said.

Authorities were searching for McCarthy Monday in the Clinton area, about 75 miles (120 kilometers) southeast of Kansas City. "He was protecting his community".

Michael was a lifelong resident of Clinton and leaves behind a wife and stepsons.

'We know as police officers that those traffic stops are always risky because we don't know the individual that is driving.

"Every traffic stop is different", he said. "You want to make sure you keep your distance but contact us".

"He has already made one killing and decided that's in his mindset", Lowe said.

People should call 911 or *55 if they see anybody suspicious or who looks like McCarthy, Lowe said.
