According to News24, the stampede happened at Gate-J.
The incident took place during a match between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.
He said the cause of the stampede was being investigated. "As Carling Black Label, Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and SMSA wish to express our honest condolences to the families of those affected by the incident".
Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety‚ Councillor Michael Sun‚ confirmed the news on Twitter during the match‚ revealing that all the gates were opened to ensure crowd control.
Live coverage of the match showed no obvious disturbance and it played on as normal.
"The city has been notified of two fatalities", said Luyanda Mfeka, the spokesman for the office of the mayor of Johannesburg.
Despite the stampede, the match continued until the end with Kaizer Chiefs winning 1-0.
"This sad loss of life at such a highly anticipated event is indeed a tragedy and the city will work with all the relevant authorities to prevent tragedies such as this in future".
The situation is calm at the moment, Sun said.
Carling Black Label and soccer fans have also joined the chorus of condolence.
