Ford says it's the first pickup truck that qualifies as "pursuit-rated". The 375hp and 470 lb-ft of torque are slightly higher than Interceptor SUV ratings - Ford has offered more power from the same engines in its trucks for years as the pickups have drivetrains capable of handling more engine output.
The Blue Oval controls 63 percent of the US police market, and has sold vehicles to law enforcement since 1920 when the Model T was used to catch bad guys.
Since it's nearly certain that the trucks will be loaded down with all the electronics of a modern law enforcement vehicle, the alternator is upgraded to a high-output, 240-amp system.
To further toughen the truck for rigorous police work, Ford upgraded the brakes, front sway bar, 18-inch aluminum wheels and all-terrain tires.
However, there are a number of key additions over the FX4's standard equipment, which includes a 280kW/635Nm 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 turbo engine matched to a 10-speed Ford SelectShift automatic transmission, plus off-road suspension and underbody skid plates.
It's also the most geographically capable cruiser, equipped with four-wheel drive to make it more hard for those incredibly entertaining police chases that jump from the highway through some cattle pasture and go on for 45 minutes longer than anyone should be comfortable with. The good guys in front get to enjoy heavy-duty cloth seats with anti-stab plates, while the bad guys in back are treated to vinyl seats and flooring that make for easy cleanup.
A 240-amp alternator is included to support on-board electrical devices, along with a police-calibrated speedometer, and engine hour and engine idle hour meters.
Crooks beware: Ford has revealed its first "pursuit-rated" pick-up and it could be just the thing for patrolling United States president Donald Trump's new Mexican border wall.
