Nintendo's Online app for Switch is launching on July 21st

Launching alongside Splatoon 2, the multiplayer application Nintendo Switch Online will control everything you need to do in your multiplayer games in the palm of your hand.

With the free version of the Nintendo Switch Online app, gamers will gain access to a Splatoon 2 companion service. SplatNet 2 lets Splatoon 2 users check out their online play stats and info on upcoming game features.

And, according to the Nintendo Direct, you'll be able to swap out your clothing, called "gear", by visiting one of the many shops in Inkopolis - all of which have spectacularly punny names.

Update: The Splatoon 2 Nintendo Direct has concluded, and true to Nintendo's word, it mostly provided an overview of many features the company had already revealed.

Look, either way, it's safe to say I'm a lot more excited for Splatoon 2 than I was before.

With the app, you can send online play invitations to players on your Nintendo Switch system's friend list. Sometimes you just don't want to shoot ink around a skate park for a couple hours while you wait for other maps to cycle through. All Splatoon amiibo also reward exclusive gear, and can be used to save gear and weapon loadouts. You could play through an action-packed single-player campaign, compete against other players online, or use the Wii U's GamePad to play one-on-one with a friend.

Players can also take part in Ranked Battles as well, where the three Ranked Battle modes rotate every two hours. Make sure you show off your freshest records to your friends via social media!

"Splatoon 2 is a huge, robust sequel to the original Splatoon", said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America's Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing.
