Scalise's condition was upgraded to "serious", from "critical" after undergoing another surgery on Saturday, according to a statement from Dr. Jack Sava, the director of trauma at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center.
Although Scalise was able to talk while lying injured on the ball field, he had gone into shock by the time he was transported by helicopter to the hospital and arrived "in critical condition with an imminent risk of death", Sava said.
A single rifle wound caused "substantial damage" to Scalise's internal organs and blood loss, his doctor explained Friday.
Sava said on Friday there were hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise's body, but "we have no intention to try and remove all the bullet fragments at this point".
Mr Scalise, who has had two surgeries, will need additional operations and will be in the hospital for "a considerable period of time, presumably weeks", Dr Sava said.
