Nadal routs Wawrinka to capture record 10th title at French Open

Among the most dominant: Nadal's 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Stan Wawrinka on Sunday, which barely lasted 2 hours and was not much of a contest at all. In a one-sided final in Paris yesterday, he completely overwhelmed Swiss star Stanislas Wawrinka in 6-2, 6-3, 6-1. Roger Federer returns from his month off to the Grand Slam that he has won seven times in his illustrious career.

Michael Bradley scored a stunning early goal from about 40 yards and the US hung on for a 1-1 tie against Mexico in a World Cup qualifier at Mexico City, gaining only its third point at Azteca Stadium as coach Bruce Arena changed seven starters and used a five-man defense to overcome the thin air and short recovery time.

Nadal has always been a modest superstar, avoiding public displays of entitlement with the same assiduity that he employs arranging the beverage bottles on the court in front of his chair.

"To win 10 Roland Garros titles is magical", added Nadal.

Only twelve months ago a tearful Nadal bailed from his favorite tournament in Paris in the first week with a wrist injury, another in a seemingly endless list of ailments to derail the 31-year-old. Federer took the opening set 6-1 but Nadal rallied back impressively to retain his crown with a 1-6 6-1 6-4 7-6 (7-4) triumph. Now he's going to be thinking going into the next three slams Novak (Djokovic) held all four. The Spaniard had other ideas, though.

Wawrinka, who may have been feeling the effects of an epic semi-final against Andy Murray, started slowly and could not get into the match. Federer is the only player with more on 18. "I didn't think I'd see him come back to win another slam, let alone emphatically".

Defeat by Austria's Dominic Thiem in Rome was a minor blip as Nadal went on to enjoy total domination at Roland Garros, emulating his 2008 and 2010 titles when he did not drop a set. To rub salt into the wounds, the Spaniard would end the year at the top of the rankings for the first time in his career.

16 - Nadal has won 16 of his 19 matches against Wawrinka, including a quarter-final win en route to the 2013 French Open title. He is also one of the only two players in the history (the other one being Mats Wilander) who has won at least two Grand Slam titles on three different surfaces (hard court, grass, and clay). When he couldn't hit through Nadal, a task bordering on impossible, he didn't quite have the patience to buckle down and work his way out of the jam he was getting himself into.

Nadal leads Federer in Masters titles 30-26 (holding the record, ) but the problem is that Rafa's dominance on clay in a way hurts him. It remains their most recent meeting at Roland Garros, with Nadal holding a ideal 5-0 record. During the period from 2005 to 2014, he won nine French Open titles and in 2009 won the only Australian Open.

Nadal opened serving in the first set. The US-New Zealand pair on Saturday won 7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 6-3 against Santiago Gonzalez and Donald Young in two hours and 14 minutes, reports Xinhua news agency.
