A newly released trailer shows off such gameplay elements.
While Mania may look like a classic Sonic game, the telltale hints of its more powerful modern hardware are visible in some visual flourishes, such as the dissolving sand loop and the shattering mirror shards.
Those of you still pinching yourselves due to the very existence Sonic Mania should pinch just that little bit harder; today the game's release date has finally been announced!
Sonic Mania is set to release on August 15, 2017 for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Sonic, Tails and Knuckles will all be playable in the game, and each one of them comes with their own unique abilities. It also has a new trailer with equal parts lovely sketch animations, nostalgia-laden pixel art, and some rad chiptune rock. Sega has assembled a "supergroup" of developers for Sonic's most recent foray into the second dimension including Christian "Taxman" Whitehead, Headcannon, and PagodaWest Games. You can re-live the Sonic of the past with an exciting new twist on classic zones while fighting against new bosses and Dr. Eggman's evil robot army.

The game was originally scheduled to launch in the spring, but Sega announced in March that it had delayed the platformer to this summer. Sonic Mania attempts to get back to the series' roots, offering true 2D Sonic gameplay.
