France's Macron to unveil list of candidates for new party

Many voters who had supported other candidates in the election's first round reluctantly cast runoff ballots for Macron only to prevent Le Pen from entering the Elysee Palace.

Last December, Valls was replaced as prime minister by Bernard Cazeneuve, who in his previous role as interior minister had overseen France's reaction to jihadist attacks.

Sylvain Crepon, a French sociologist and a leading expert on Le Pen's National Front (FN), said the party "has managed to implant its identity politics across the political spectrum".

Monday was a French national holiday marking decades of peace in Western Europe, something Mr Macron made a cornerstone of his campaign against Ms Le Pen's brand of nationalist populism. The people held their referendum last Sunday.

"I will fight with all of my strength against the divisions that are undermining us", he said.

2017 was a year of three important elections.

May has called an early election for June 8, arguing that her Conservatives need a bigger majority in order to stand firm against - and strike deals with - the EU.
