Shaw desperate to prove Mourinho wrong and stay at Man United

The 35-year-old looked to be heading for the exit last summer following Mourinho's arrival at the Theatre of Dreams but was kept on for another season. Mourinho is not the first manager to question the player's diet and training efforts with ex-Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino and ex-England boss Roy Hodgson voicing their concerns, as did Van Gaal. "He has to change his football brain". If he was on the other side, for sure he would not do it.

You might have thought his adequate performance would earn him a temporary reprieve from his manager. "He has to improve and we have to help". The buys didn't quite come off, but since Mourinho has come in I think you can see the improvement.

He initially struggled to feature under Jose Mourinho and went nearly three months without a Premier League start after his half-time substitution against Manchester City in September. "We need the kids to grow up".

"At this level we need the fantastic body he has to play football, the fantastic physical qualities he has, the very good technical ability he has, but he can not play with my understanding of the game".

While Mkhitaryan has played a leading role in keeping United in the hunt for a top-four finish, he did miss their EFL Cup triumph through injury and concedes he is hoping to get another opportunity to land major silverware in the Europa League. Remember, this is the same manager who had no problem calling Marcelo fat in a press conference.

Predictably, Mourinho still managed to sully Shaw's performance. "Some people would see it as bullying of a young player, but Luke will not see it like that".

The Holland global joined Manchester United for £13.2m in the summer of 2014, fresh from being named Dutch Footballer of the Year as Ajax won a fourth consecutive league title.

"With the VAR (video assistant referee), we win this game 2-1 because it's not an offside", Mourinho told BT Sport.

He must understand, he must think, he must accelerate the process. "But today he has with a positive feeling".

Here's what fans on social media had to say about Shaw's future at Old Trafford. The second year after the first one is hard.

His long career at United saw league struggle long before glory, making Robson well placed to know what it takes to turn things around.
