Samsung's Galaxy S8 phone aims to dispel the Note 7 debacle

To make the Samsung DeX desktop-like experience work, the user will need to have a Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8 Plus. Apple is rumored to be prepping an iPhone 8 with a 5.8-inch curved OLED display for a September launch. The phones will go on sale starting April 21 and they come in four different colors, Midnight Black, Orchid Gray, Arctic Silver, Coral Blue and Maple Gold.

At the bottom of the screen is what's being described as an "always on" home button.

There is plenty to like about the S8 but whether it will be enough to win back consumers frightened away by the Note 7 disaster, which has cost the company more than $5 billion, remains to be seen. It offers 83 percent more screen-to-body ratio. The S8+'s screen is 6.2 inches.

Internal storage is limited to 64GB for both models but can be expanded with a micro SD. The microSD card slot will handle cards up to 256GB giving you a theoretical max of over 300GB to do with what you please on your phone.

Both chips are produced with Samsung's 10-nanometer technology, which allows for better power efficiency and performance compared to its predecessor.

Other hardware specifications include a 3,000mAh battery in the Galaxy S8, a 3,500mAh battery in the Galaxy S8+, Bluetooth 5.0, wireless charging, and USB-C connectivity. But there is no increase in battery capacity, providing the battery more breathing room. Samsung will be watched closely when it comes to that battery. In fact, failure to accommodate for work is one of the biggest complaints levelled at Google's Android mobile operating system. It's created to step in when speaking makes more sense than tapping. Bixby defaults to a female-sounding voice out of the box, but as the Wall Street Journal points out, you can also change the AI to have a male voice.

Bixby has been integrated inside the camera app, so you can select images in the viewfinder and Bixby will scan it and identify it. It "leverages contextual awareness to learn users' habits and provide related information". For instance, you can look up the price of a book by pointing the camera at it, or check the rating for a wine or even food pairings by aiming the camera at the bottle.

Samsung says it will add many more partners over time.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 a year ago shipped with a micro USB connector and I was extremely disappointed by that. Early reports suggest it's not as natural as the haptic-powered Home screen that Apple uses on the iPhone 7. Plus the fingerprint scanner, while inconveniently placed, will help keep all your sensitive business data safe.

People can also use facial recognition to unlock the phone, which Samsung has offered in the past. Via Engadget, Samsung did an extended demo where they asked Bixby to "capture this and send it to Cindy" and Bixby could fully understand the context of the request. You'll see a desktop-like interface with a dedicated app tray and notification area.

The cameras also support 4K video recording at 30 fps and 1080p HD video recording at 30 fps or 60 fps. It also handles right clicks and keyboard shortcuts.

The Android OS can already support multitasking, allowing you to run two apps at once.
