"Our first runner in the race, the jockey's first ride in the race and trainer Jessica Harrington's first horse in the race".
Sizing John gave Irish trainer Jessica Harrington her first victory in the Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup with her first runner when coming home a clear-cut victor of jumping's blue riband prize.
It looked like Djakadam was going to finally go one better for Willie Mullins, but he faded late on to finish fourth.
This horse, who is now 11, seems to have been around forever and amazingly first caught my attention in 2010 when he won the champion bumper at 40-1.
Given a patient ride by Robbie Power, Sizing John kept on strongly up the hill to score by two and three-quarter lengths from the staying-on Minella Rocco (18-1). Initially disappointing over fences, he came good to win a strong renewal of the National Hunt Chase at the last Festival, with Native River second.
Crowned the Queen of Cheltenham, it was a first runner in the Gold Cup for trainer Jessica Harrington. In so doing, he claimed his sixth victor of the week to tie with Mullins but he won the title on countback to placed runners.
Two fences in, it was all over for the 23-year-old. The stamina queries are factored into his price of 8/1, but I think he has a big each way shout of capping a marvellous week for Ireland at this Festival.
Hobbs was brought to tears by the victory and added, "It's a relief! He has always jumped well--there have been one or two little hiccups, but overall his jumping is mustard".
With only one favourite winning on the final day - Defi Du Seuil - it was another good one for the bookies leaving them well ahead over the course of the meeting. Their son, France's reigning champion jockey Pierre-Charles, couldn't make it to Cheltenham as he was too busy riding a victor at Fontainebleau only seconds before Defi Du Seuil struck at Cheltenham. "It is great to be here today".
"I'm not on cloud nine, I'm on cloud 109", she said. "Le Seuil is the place where we breed our horses, like Catamaran du Seuil (Fr), who is also running today and is an uncle to Defi".
"He wears his heart on his sleeve and we are so proud of him".
It followed their Coral Cup victory with Supasundae on Wednesday.
Nicky Henderson's charge was odds on to supplement a previous win at the Sunbury venue but he was struggling a fair way out that day, before starting to come back on the bridle approaching the penultimate flight.
