Jio readies to take competition head-on with paid services

Reliance Jio looks to gather even more users through its Jio Prime Membership offer which will offer the Happy New Year offer to users for 1 year (till March 31, 2018) at Rs 99.

With its Happy New Year Offer, which was similar to its initial promotional offer of free voice and data to attract customers, coming to an end on March 31, Jio will start offering its tariff plans from April 1.

Once you are a JIO Prime member, you will have to pay Rs 303 per month and get the same free JIO services that you get now.

In the same meeting, Ambani said that Jio will be covering 99 percent of India by the end of this year and announced that the company won't be expanding the New Year Offer beyond March 31. They will also enjoy from a range of deals lined up by Jio and its partners. "Indians consume as much data as is consumed in the U.S. and around 50 percent more than the data consumed in all of China", Ambani said.

JIO acquired 50 million subscribers in 83 days since commercial launch on September 5 and 100 million in 170 days. The PRIME members can enjoy the Jio services for one more year.

Unlike the previous offers from Reliance Jio, the Prime membership offer isn't exactly cheap.

Rajan S Mathews, director general, Cellular Operators Association of India, said paid services would mean that "consumer choice and preferences will now be revealed in the marketplace". Afterwards, every Jio customer will get free unlimited domestic calls, no terms and conditions and no hidden charges. The Jio carries almost 5.5 crore hours of video daily on its network.

"Jio has more than twice 4G base stations as compared to the combined capacity of all telecom operators in India". However, voice calls will still remain free and there will not be any roaming charges on these plans.

People can also walk-in to any Jio store and subscribe to the membership.

What is covered under the Jio Prime plan?

Reliance Jio's 4G VoLTE cellular service has become the primary mobile data connection gateway in India, according to a report.

India, he said, has now become the No 1 global mobile data consumer in the world - ahead of the USA and China. The users can buy Prime membership throughout next month.
