The addition of Bareilles might give a boost to the show's already healthy box office, as the singer-songwriter's fans turn out to catch her in her Broadway acting debut.
Waitress composer-lyricist Sara Bareilles will replace Jessie Mueller in the role of master pie baker Jenna in the Broadway musical March 31 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre after the Tony-nominated star plays her final performance March 26.
Barielles took to Instagram Thursday to announce her new role and share her gratitude and excitement. She'll play the leading role of Jenna Hunterson for a 10-week run from March 31 through June 11, replacing Tony Award victor Jessie Mueller. "I'm obviously having a hard time saying goodbye".
Barellis - who acted in musicals in high school - had previously told AOL that stepping into the role would be "a dream", but that her "no. 1 priority right now is to work on [her] next record" and "remember how to be Sara".
"Waitress", which opened in April, is based on the 2007 film written and directed by Adrienne Shelly and starring Keri Russell as Jenna, a pregnant, unhappily married small-town waitress with a penchant for making pies. "It will be an incredible privilege to join the cast onstage and tell this lovely story".
This will not be the first time Barielles will sing her own songs. Grammy and Tony victor Jessie Mueller has been playing the role since the show opened on March 25, 2016.
She added jokingly, "Panic attacks available now". "So I'm making the big jump, and it feels like a completion of sorts, a coming full circle with this project".
